Novato, CA – Marinscope Community Newspapers, a group of six weekly newspapers serving Marin County, has been sold to Nevada community newspaper owner/operator Sherman Frederick, and his wife, Christina, it was announced today.
The Marin County weeklies included in the group are: the Marin Scope of Sausalito; the Mill Valley Herald; the San Rafael News Pointer; the Twin Cities Times of Larkspur and Corte Madera; the Ross Valley Reporter; and the Novato Advance. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Marin Scope Incorporated was acquired by Dr. Vijay Mallya in 1998 from its founder, Paul Anderson. Subsequently, Marin Scope Inc. acquired the Novato Advance in 2008 from Scripps Enterprises. Mr. Frederick, former publisher of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, owns a group of weeklies in Northern Nevada under the umbrella of Battle Born Media, LLC. The purchase of the Marin weeklies is his first newspaper acquisition outside of Nevada.
“We’re a company made up of people who still believe in journalism,” Frederick said. “Marin County is a remarkable place with remarkable people. We can’t wait to get started.”
Tony Bedi, Vice President of Marin Scope, Inc., also commented on the acquisition: “Sherm and Christina Frederick’s commitment to community journalism has made our transaction possible. We are very pleased to pass the ownership of Marinscope on to such dedicated publishers.”
Gold Country Advisors, a merger-and-acquisition firm in Folsom, CA, represented Marin Scope, Inc. in the transaction.
