RALEIGH – North Carolina newspapers have been for generations the go-to source for the public to comb official local government notices about zoning and annexation proposals, openings for vendor contracts and public hearing dates for the upcoming budget.

Some lawmakers and governments believe it makes sense in today’s electronic age to give governments the option to post legally required public notices on their own websites, rather than to keep paying newspapers to run them. The option could save taxpayer money, they say, and foster direct communication with citizens.
