Camelot Is History In Akron

By: Dave Astor

Why did the Akron (Ohio) Beacon Journal reinstate “Mary Worth” but not “Prince Valiant”? It’s classified.

The same number of readers — about 110 — complained after each comic was dropped earlier this month. The Beacon Journal decided to accommodate “Mary Worth” fans by putting the strip in the classified section, but finding a place for the Sunday-only “Prince Valiant” was another matter. The paper doesn’t plan to bring back the King Arthur-era strip at this point.

Replacing the veteran comics were two newer ones — “Get Fuzzy” and “Flo and Friends.” Beacon Journal Public Editor Mike Needs told E&P Online that the paper doesn’t like upsetting readers loyal to certain strips, but: “We believe it’s good to showcase some new comic talent. We generally change an average of about two comics a year.”
