The Quincy (Ill.) Herald-Whig reported that before Viola and David Deming’s trailer was destroyed by a fire, newspaper carrier Matt Scheiter managed to get in and rescue their dog.

While the Herald-Whig motor route carrier was delivering to Deming’s neighbor in Liberty, Ill., Sept. 20, he saw smoke coming from the trailer and Deming headed toward it.

“She said her dog was inside, and she tried to go in the front door, but there was too much smoke, and she came back out,” Scheiter told the Herald-Whig.

After Scheiter called 911 from his cell phone, Deming urged him to break through the trailer’s other door. Inside, after searching through thick smoke that burned his eyes, Scheiter found the dog.

Deming said Scheiter “went above and beyond the call of duty.”
