An April Fool’s Day “Baldo” comic showing the Tia Carmen character getting deported has stirred a huge reader reaction.

“We’ve been swamped with e-mail,” said Hector Cantu, who does the Universal Press Syndicate strip with Carlos Castellanos. “Obviously, the strip has hit a nerve with lots of people, both pro- and anti-immigrant.”

Cantu added that the comic was intended to get people to think about the immigration issue.

The Sunday strip pictures gun-wielding Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents wrongly accusing Tia Carmen of being in the U.S. illegally and then dragging her to a truck in handcuffs.
