Cartoon Lawyer Gets a Shot at Hollywood

Harvey Richards: Lawyer for Children — one of the characters in Ruben Bolling’s “Tom the Dancing Bug” comic — has been optioned for a feature film by New Line Cinema.

NLC is known for “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, the “Austin Powers” movies, and other films. Richards is known for getting involved with everything from playground disputes to parent-child negotiations.

Universal Press Syndicate’s AMUSE division will co-produce “Harvey Richards.” The syndicate distributes “Tom the Dancing Bug,” winner of two Association of Alternative Newsweeklies awards for best comic, to more than 75 newspapers and Web sites. Bolling’s feature has also been collected in three books.

Other characters in the strip include God-Man the omnipotent superhero, Charley the australopithecine, Sam Roland the detective who dies, Billy Dare the boy adventurer, and Dinkle the unlovable loser.
