Editorial cartoonist Scott Nychay is still winning awards for the Illinois newspaper that let him go — and Nychay doesn’t like it.

The Chicago Reader’s Michael Miner reported Friday that Nychay won awards from the Illinois Press Association and the Associated Press despite being laid off last October by the Crystal Lake Northwest Herald.

Miner wrote: “In deep distress, Nychay called IPA and the AP to explore the possibility of renouncing his awards. Not to sound ungrateful, but he didn?t much like the idea of the Herald entering him without his permission and basking in his triumphs.”

Earlier this year, the Herald ran a TV commercial that including a positive mention of Nychay’s work even though he had been fired. The paper said the ad was created while Nychay was still with the paper, that it was an oversight to continued running it, and pulled the ad.
