Richard Rockwell, a longtime art assistant to “Steve Canyon” cartoonist Milton Caniff, died last Tuesday at the age of 85.

The nephew of artist Norman Rockwell also did editorial cartoons, comic-book art, book illustrations, and courtroom sketches. He was a teacher, too.

Caniff, best known for his “Terry and the Pirates” comic, did “Steve Canyon” from 1947 until his death in 1988.
