Cartoonist’s Dog Remembered in ‘Overboard’ Comic

By: E&P Staff

Cartoonist Chip Dunham paid tribute to his late dog Basil in the Monday installment of “Overboard.”

The black lab, who died May 30 at the age of 13, was the inspiration for Louie the dog in the Universal Press Syndicate comic.

In the Monday strip, Louie and Captain stand at Basil’s grave. Louie remembers, among other things, that Basil “was a fast runner.” Captain notes that Basil “firmly believed that every squirrel he saw on the ground should be chased back up into the trees.”

The comic can be seen here.

Many readers contacted Universal to ask that their condolences be forwarded to the Michigan-based Dunham. One wrote: “My sympathy to you, Chip, but Basil will live on in your readers’ hearts and yours and as long as we live so will Basil.”
