Sun-Times Media Group (STMG) CEO Cyrus F. Freidheim said late Wednesday he is also taking on the title of publisher of the flagship Chicago Sun-Times.
He replaces John Cruickshank who announced last week that he is retiring to become publisher of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s English-language news division.
STMG Vice President of Operations Rick will take also add Cruickshank’s former position as the group’s COO.
Rick has been with us since January, and has done a stellar job overseeing pre-press, production, distribution and procurement,” Freidheim said in a memo to employees. “He was the architect behind the distribution agreement with Chicago Tribune Co. announced in August, and has been responsible for product development initiatives and completion of our plant restructuring initiative started last fall.”
Sun-Times Editor in Chief Michael Cooke will take on an addition role as vice president, editorial for the Sun-Times News Group, the unit that publishes about 100 daily and community papers in the Chicago area.
“Michael will guarantee that our titles will remain energized, reader-focused and fiercely local,” Freidheim said in the memo.
In addition, Friedheim named Fred Lebolt, STMG’s vice president, new media, will become a member of the executive committee.
All appointments are effective Oct. 1.
