Many people retire at 65. So will William Block Sr. — not at 65 years of age but 65 years after he began working at his family’s newspaper company.
On Dec. 10, he announced his retirement as chairman of Block Communications Inc., parent of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and The Blade in Toledo, Ohio. He will remain on the boards of the company and the two papers.
Block, 86, joined the family business in 1936, and became co-publisher of the two papers following the death of his father in 1941. He has served as chairman since 1987.
William Block Jr., his son and the company president, will succeed him as chairman. Executive Vice President John R. Block will become vice chairman.
Allan Block, head of the company’s cable TV and broadcast divisions, will become managing director. David Huey, president of Buckeye CableSystem in Toledo, has been named president. The appointments will be effective Jan. 1.
