The News-Gazette, Champaign, Ill., selected Schur Packaging Systems to supply mailroom equipment for its new production facility. The first phase of the plant’s packaging area will receive equipment early next year, with start up expected in the second quarter. The post-press automation support packaging and distributing the paper’s 46,000-circulation Sunday edition.
Schur will provide a 40-hopper A883 collator with a CMC JWR to wrap the insert package in plastic. That package will be stacked in a Schur A600 stacker, strapped and sent to a Schur palletizing system consisting of a Winrob II Palletizer and a PSW stretch wrapper.
A 10-hopper A855 inserter will assemble advance packages for Sunday collation and for some daily packages. The inserter will deliver to a Schur A600 stacker and associated tie-line equipment and to a second Schur A600 tied into the palletizing system.
Two manual dock lines will deliver complete packages to carriers, for whom each line will use a Schur BAL440 to label each bundle.
The combination of A883 collator and CMC JWR flow wrapper is rated for up to 30,000 copies per hour. Collating will be controlled by Schur’s TMS mailroom system, which also will control the A855 inserter, rated for up to 35,000 copies per hour.
The Winrob II is a fully automatic palletizer developed to handle both strapped and unstrapped bundles with a capacity of up to 35 bundles per minute. Palletizing will be controlled by the TPS production-management system integrated in the overall distribution system. It also interfaces to other suppliers’ systems.
Among the TPS system’s capabilities are programmed pallet production, pallet addressing, and bundle tracking related to zoned inserts. Reports and statistics may be extracted to optimize production.
