Sullivan County, N.Y., sheriff’s detectives arrested a newspaper deliverer on charges of altering checks and stealing money intended for his employer.

Julian Arvelo, 48, was charged forgery and larceny for changing checks from stores over several months and depositing them into his own account, according to an Aug. 16 report in the Times Herald-Record, Middletown, N.Y.

The checks were issued as payment to Arvelo’s employer, Hudson News, which supplies New York City metro-area newspapers to gas stations and convenience stores in Sullivan County.

The lead detective in the ongoing investigation told the Times Herald-Record that the theft exceeded $3,000, “and we are still counting.”

Arvelo is in the county jail without bail, pending a court appearance.
