Charges have been filed in an attack on a newspaper editor who was beaten with a bottle and suffered a fractured skull.

Paul Profeta, news editor at the Springfield News-Sun, was listed in serious condition Friday at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton.

Profeta, 49, was attacked in the parking lot of a store Dec. 20, police said. Hours earlier, two women also were beaten with bottles in attempted robberies. They suffered minor injuries.

Virgil Smith, 19, of South Vienna, was indicted Tuesday on charges of attempted murder, felonious assault and aggravated robbery of Profeta. Smith was charged with aggravated robbery and felonious assault in the attacks on the two women.

Profeta joined the News-Sun in 1999 as a copy editor and was named news editor last January.
