The Chicago Defender is adding some flesh and blood to its skeleton newsroom with the addition of two full-time reporters this week.
Tuesday, Demetrius Patterson joined the black-oriented daily as a general assignment staff writer. Monday, Mema Ayi started work, also as a general assignment staff writer.
In recent months the paper has had just one general assignment staffer, with additional local news provided by graduate journalism students with Northwestern University’s Medill News Service.
Executive Editor Roland S. Martin announced the additions in a memo to the newsroom. He did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment.
Both reporters are former interns at the Defender. Ayi previously worked at The Times of Northwest Indiana. Patterson previously worked for Gannett Co.’s Journal News in White Plains, N.Y.
