‘Chick’ Gonzales Dies at 79, Owned Iowa Paper for 50 Years

Charles P. “Chick” Gonzales, who spent 50 years with the Guthrie Center (Iowa) Times, died on May 31. He was 79.

Gonzales, a Nebraska native, earned a journalism degree from the University of Nebraska after serving in the U.S. Army in Japan.

He had worked at the Lincoln (Neb.) Star-Journal, the Salina (Kan.) Journal, the Ida County (Iowa) Pioneer-Record before he bought the Guthrie Center Times-Guthrian in 1955. He founded the Lake Panorama (Iowa) Times in 1969.

In 1983 he received the Iowa Newspaper Association’s Mastor Editor-Publisher Award. He served on the association’s board of directors form 1990 to 1993.

He is survived by his wife, Margradelle, his son Scott (Bonna) of Guthrie Center, a sister, two step-siblings, two granddaughters, and a great granddaughter.
