Guy Tasaka, chief digital officer and vice president at Calkins Media, has been selected as the recipient of the Local Media Innovator of the Year award. The LMA award is bestowed upon a senior-level local media executive that has been the catalyst for transformative change at their company.
The recipient should exhibit bold leadership in local media by pioneering new concepts or creating new business units and they should be considered “game-changers” or “thought-leaders” in the industry. In addition, the recipient should demonstrate a willingness to share their success stories and lessons learned with others in the industry, the ability to lead their company in a transformative way and have created a culture of innovation at their company.
In nominating Tasaka, Mark G. Contreras, CEO of Calkins Media wrote, “He [Tasaka] has also put Calkins in the enviable position to be on the forefront of video distribution on platforms such as Roku, Amazon Fire and has set us up to participate on the Apple TV platform at some point in the future. We are now in a position—because of Guy’s leadership—to offer these publishing platforms to other brands and publishers that we feel will represent a significant revenue stream for us in the future.”
“I’m very honored that LMA recognized the accomplishments of Calkins Media,” Tasaka said. “The support of everyone within Calkins makes this a huge company win. Our amazing digital team is on par or better than those at media technology startups I have worked at and made what you’ve seen possible. Everyone involved on our team has a huge desire to see the local media model survive.”
“Congratulations to Guy and all of the nominees,” said Nancy Lane, president, Local Media Association. “This was the most competitive field of entries ever received and the nominating committee really had a hard time selecting just one winner. In the end, Guy’s OTT strategy at Calkins really stood out as the major differentiator, especially coming from a smaller media company. I would be remiss not to acknowledge the others that are doing amazing work in our industry and offer our congratulations to them as well.”
Tasaka will be recognized during a luncheon at the Local Media Association Innovation Conference, O, in Denver.
