Southeast China’s Xin’an Media Corp. Ltd., a joint venture begun two years ago by the Anhui Daily Newspaper Group and the South African MIH Print Media Group, ordered a manroland Uniset heatset-coldset press to print its newspapers, other publications such as books, and selected commercial work.

The venture is the first foreign cooperation among China’s newspapers, according to manroland. The 7-year-old Anhui Daily Newspaper Group publishes 10 newspapers and three other periodicals, of which the Xin’an Evening News is the largest in Anhui Province.

The hybrid press will go into production early next year in a new plant in Hefei, where the group is headquartered. The company now prints newspapers on a competitor’s presses at two other locations, which also print China’s People’s Daily and more than 20 other newspapers.

Reportedly the world’s fifth largest media group and active in more than 50 countries, MIH Print Media Group owns more than 80 newspapers and 60 magazines, electronic media outlets and various subsidiaries.

The Uniset will be China’s first installation of the latest model, which can print up to 80,000 copies of 24-page broadsheets or 48-page tabloids per hour, or 40,000 copies of 48-page broadsheets or 96-page tabloids. The press also can produce A4 journals and magazines and commercial products. The order calls for three reel splicers, three printing towers, a dryer and two folders – one equipped with a 16-page device.
