Community Newspaper Holdings Inc., Birmingham, Ala., named former Morehead State University Vice President Keith R. Kappes publisher of the Morehead News Group, which comprises The Morehead News, Grayson Journal-Enquirer and Olive Hill Times, all in Kentucky.
Eddie Blakeley, publisher of The Daily Independent in Ashland and senior vice president of CNHI’s Kentucky Division, said Kappes’ work as a higher education communications and marketing executive and “earlier experience in print and broadcast journalism make him uniquely qualified for this position.”
Kappes is a native of Carter County and longtime resident of Rowan County – the three papers’ markets. “These newspapers provide vital services to their communities, and I hope to help make our quality news and advertising products even better,” he added.
The former Associated Press writer retired in 2008 as vice president for university relations but remained a part-time assistant to Morehead’s president.
His experience in journalism includes work as a reporter for the Ironton (Ohio) Tribune, reporter and bureau manager for Ashland’s Daily Independent and Huntington (W.Va.) Herald-Dispatch, and in local radio news in Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee.
Kappes chairs the Morehead Tourism Commission, Jesse Stuart Foundation and Rowan County Ethics Commission, and is a member of the Morehead-Rowan County Economic Development Council.
