John Cole of The Herald-Sun in Durham, N.C., won the John Fischetti Editorial Cartoon Competition sponsored by Columbia College Chicago. Cole’s drawing — titled “Strom Thurmond’s South” — showed two water fountains labeled “white” and “black.” Then the second panel showed one bed labeled “white” and “black.”

The second-place winner was Steve Sack of the Minneapolis Star Tribune and Tribune Media Services. His cartoon showed President Bush saying “no decision has been made” as numerous military ships and planes headed out to sea.

Honorable mentions went to Gary Markstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and Copley News Service and Kevin “KAL” Kallaugher of The Sun in Baltimore and the Cartoonists & Writers Syndicate.

The contest memorializes John Fischetti, a Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist for the New York Herald Tribune, Chicago Daily News, and Chicago Sun-Times.
