Colorado State University Campus Newspaper Says No to Gannett Offer

A Gannett pitch to form a partnership with the Colorado State University campus newspaper, the Rocky Mountain Collegian, and The Coloradoan in Fort Collins was turned down.

Gannett first put forward the deal in late February to buy the non-profit college newspaper, though no formal proposal was made, The Daily Free Press at Boston University reports today. During one conversation with The Collegian, the student paper told Gannett reps that it was not for sale.

This is not the first offer Gannett has made to purchase college newspapers. The corporate media company already works with two Florida college newspapers, both for-profit: It purchased the FSView and Florida Flambeau at Florida State University in 2006, and partnered them with the Tallahassee Democrat. It acquired The Central Florida Future at Central Florida University last year.

The Collegian has made no decisions about the future of its business, but CSU Campus Life Executive Director Anne Hudgens told Boston University?s Daily Free Press that the paper is continuing to look at other newspaper business models. Its priority, she told the Daily Free Press, is to “maintain academic integrity and journalistic integrity.”
