Southern Lithoplate Inc., Wake Forest, N.C., reported continuing demand in the first three months of 2008 for products from the Southern Lithoplate CtP Alliance Solution.

First-quarter North American sales and installations included thermal computer-to-plate imagers, processors, punch/bend systems and workflow-management software. All locations incorporated Viper 830 lithoplates as part of their integrated production systems.

The Visalia (Calif.) Times-Delta worked with Southern Lithoplate to devise an efficient prepress workflow. The 19,645-circulation Gannett daily installed two production lines built around Screen PlateRite News 2000S thermal platesetters and Proteck 105 plate processors. Having already decided on thermal platesetting, space limitations also were a factor in choosing the compact PlateRite News 2000S, which “easily fit our available space,” Production Director Cortland Hunt said in a statement.

On average, 3,500 to 4,000 Viper 830 plates are made per month in Visalia, where two plate streams feed a single conveyor, which leads to a Burgess Industries punch/bender. The newspaper implemented ProImage America’s NewsWay workflow software as its digital front end.

Elsewhere in the state, MediaNews Group’s San Jose Mercury News purchased three MK III Supreme 85 processors. The Bay Area News Group, also owned by MediaNews Group, purchased an MK III Supreme 85 processor and an MK II 125 processor for its Walnut Creek, Calf., location. It bought two MK III Supreme 85 processors for its Concord, Calif., site.

The Paducah (Ky.) Sun installed two PlateRite News 2000S units with two CA Systems/Egraph Polyheat 33 processors and the Nela Benchmark three-point punch/bender. The Presteligence NewsXtreme workflow system drives prepress production.

Published by the Metroland Media Group division of Torstar, the six-day Hamilton (Ont.) Spectator incorporated a Kodak Trendsetter News 150 and two MK III Supreme 85 processors to add speed and reliability to plate production, which it automated with ProImage NewsWay.

The Citizen Tribune, Morristown, Tenn., installed aPlateRite News 2000S, Proteck 105 processor and Screen’s Trueflow Rite News workflow management system.

The twice-weekly Cambridge (Minn.) Star adopted thermal platesetting with a PlateRite News 2000S, Proteck 105, and Trueflow Rite News.

The 3,949-circulation Delphos (Ohio) Daily Herald now uses a PlateRite News 2000S, Proteck 105, and Polkadots Software’s Newsflo workflow solution.
