Copley News Service will continue to syndicate Michael Ramirez now that the former Los Angeles Times editorial cartoonist has joined Investor’s Business Daily (IBD).
Copley initially wondered if Ramirez would do business-oriented cartoons for IBD that might not be appropriate for his more than 400 general-circulation newspaper clients. But Glenda Winders, Copley’s vice president and editor, said Tuesday that Ramirez will create cartoons on similar topics for IBD as he did for the Times.
“The only change is he won’t have to comment on California and Los Angeles anymore,” added Winders, who noted that IBD is a national publication. And, she said, Ramirez may start drawing cartoons in color.
Winders said Ramirez hasn’t lost any clients — and in fact has gained a few — since the Times announced in November that it was letting him go at the end of 2005. IBD subsequently announced last week (E&P Online, Jan. 6) that it was hiring the 1994 Pulitzer Prize winner as a senior editor/staff cartoonist.
“I think Michael is an enormous talent,” Winders told E&P. “I knew he would land on his feet, and we’re proud to continue to be his syndicate.”
