Palestinian creator Bahaa Boukhari has won the Cartoonists Rights Network International’s 2008 Courage in Editorial Cartooning Award.
The honor will be officially presented June 26 at the CRNI’s annual dinner during the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists convention in San Antonio, Texas.
Boukhari has had a long cartooning career in the Mideast. Last winter, Gaza authorities arrested him and suspended publication of a newspaper that ran a cartoon they didn’t like. Boukhari and two colleagues were convicted of insulting the Hamas Parliament, but their fines and prison sentences were suspended.
CRNI helps cartoonists who find themselves in trouble from government officials or other powerful figures because of their work. The Virginia-based organization, whose founder/executive editor is Robert Russell, has affiliate organizations in 15 countries.
