David Westphal, Washington editor for McClatchy Newspapers, announced in an email to staffers today that he would be leaving the organization this fall, “to head for Los Angeles, where my wife, Geneva Overholser, has just been named director of the University of Southern California School of Journalism. I will also join the USC team as an executive in residence in the School of Communications.”

He continued: “Leaving McClatchy, leaving the bureau and MCT, will be
like leaving home, for they have been as perfect a fit for an aspiring journalist as I could have ever hoped. I’ll have more to say in a few months. For now, let me just say thank you. Over the last two years you have made this coming together of two wonderful news
organization an almost effortless task. And you’ve continued to produce the kind of journalism that has brought distinction and honor.

“Howard Weaver, my boss and McClatchy’s vice president for news, will be in touch about next steps. In the meantime, your intrepid leaders, John Walcott and Jane Scholz, will join me in moving forward. MCT has just
reported another better-than-budgeted quarter after last year’s record earnings. This week the Washington Bureau will accept two prestigious national awards. Our Website is showing rapid growth. This place
marches on.”
