William Dean Singleton, the MediaNews Group Inc. vice chairman and CEO who now heads the nation’s largest newspaper association, kicked off last week’s Nexpo equipment show by warning papers not to abandon their investment in the Internet.
“I think there will be a price to pay for pulling back too far. I’m a believer that the payoff on the Web is there — it’s just waiting for us to discover the right models,” Singleton said at the Newspaper Association of America show in Orlando, Fla.
Newspaper Web sites already are paying off by boosting print circulation, he said, citing a Belden Associates study that found single-copy sales jumped 21% among people visiting newspaper sites.
