Denzel Washington will produce and possibly star in a film “Journal for Jordan,” based on the recent New York Times essay by one of its editors, Dana Canedy.

In that article, she described a 200-page journal written by her fiance, 1st Sgt. Charles Monroe King, for their infant son. She is now writing a book for Crown. The film rights were acquired by Escape Artists at Columbia Pictures.

The 48-year-old soldier was killed in Baghdad in October, one month shy of finishing his tour of duty. He had left for the Middle East before his son was born, and saw him once on leave last August.

In the journal he passed along words of wisdom to the son on how to live and to prepare him for a life without his father.
