Do Technology Companies Care About Journalism?

On Tuesday, Google announced it would partner with McClatchy to fund three, new local news entities in communities of less than 500,000 people. This marks a change in how quickly the news business is being absorbed into the fringes of large technology businesses. For the first time, a major technology company is working directly with news executives to set up a local news operation, which it proposes to fund.

    In the very near future, Apple and Google will replace the New York Times and The Washington Post making newspapers obsolete.

    The probative question would be why do technology companies care about local news. As framed, the headline invites an inference that only a preferred type of concern — as arbitrated by the editor — would comprise caring about local news.

    Funding local news is prima facia evidence that they have some interest and concern. Honed to a fine point, the question is what editorial values and control will tech agencies purchase with their investment.
