(AP) The E.W. Scripps Co. said Tuesday it now expects first-quarter earnings to be better than expected because revenue from its cable television channels has increased.
It expects earnings of 50 to 56 cents, up from 44 cents a year ago.
The company previously had projected earnings of 40 to 50 cents in the period ending March 31. Scripps is scheduled to announce the earnings the second week of April.
Scripps said revenue from its cable TV channels is up 3% from a year ago. The company had earlier projected a drop of 5% to 10% in those revenues.
Scripps’ cable channels include Home & Garden Television, Do It Yourself, and the Food Network.
The Cincinnati-based company operates 21 daily newspapers, 10 broadcast television stations, and three cable television channels. The company also operates Scripps Howard News Service; United Media, which licenses and syndicates the “Peanuts” and “Dilbert” comic strips; and 31 Web sites.
