The East Oregonian will change to all-morning publication starting March 27 after being a primarily evening newspaper for most of its 137-year history, Publisher Tom Brown announced today.

The newspaper is currently delivered in the morning on weekends, and in the afternoon Tuesday through Friday, and is the only daily newspaper covering Umatilla and Morrow counties.

“We tested weekday morning delivery during Pendleton Round-Up week last September and found it very popular with our readers and advertisers,” Brown said. Morning publication allows the East Oregonian to provide readers with more timely news on city councils, school activities, sports and other events that happen in the afternoon and evening, he said.

“Very little news occurs during the first few hours of the business day,” Brown noted, “so by delivering the printed EO in the morning, our readers can have more up-to-date-news and read it before going to work, over breakfast, during a coffee break or at lunchtime.”

Many advertisers have asked for a shift to all-morning publication, because it gives readers more time each day to spend with the newspaper and make informed buying decisions, he said. Copies of the EO will be available in newspaper racks and stores as early as 3 a.m. Grocery ads will be inserted on Wednesday mornings, the day grocery specials become effective. Articles and the e-edition of the EO will be posted on www.eastoregonian.com during the early morning hours for print and online subscribers.

“We are pleased to be able to provide morning delivery of the EO to provide readers with as many choices possible during their busy days to find out what is going on in Eastern Oregon,” Brown said. Morning publication will have no effect on advertising deadlines or office hours.

The East Oregonian offices in Pendleton and Hermiston are open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The circulation department will also be staffed Tuesday through Friday starting at 6 a.m. and weekends from 6-10 a.m. to respond to phone calls about delivery concerns.
