Editorial cartoonist John James Knudsen died of bone cancer last month at the age of 85, the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists (AAEC) reported Thursday night.

Knudsen — an AAEC member for 48 of the organization’s 51 years — did cartoons for the Catholic publication Tidings before joining what is now The San Diego Union-Tribune. His work was syndicated.

The Montana native was also the author of a non-cartooning book about his World War II experiences as a pilot. “Off I Went into the Wild Blue Yonder” was published last October by Pelican.
