The Erie Times-News is offering buyouts in hopes of cutting 25 employees without layoffs.
Publisher and chief executive of the Times Publishing Co, Rosanne Cheeseman, says tough market conditions prompted the move, although the newspaper’s daily circulation has grown.
The newspaper has 273 employees and 51 will be eligible for the buyouts. Layoffs will be necessary if enough employees don’t take the incentives.
Cheeseman says the buyouts are a “tough business decision in the toughest economy in memory, and one that we have tried to avoid making.”
The newspaper hasn’t specified which employees are eligible for the buyouts. Workers were told of the offer Monday.
