EXCLUSIVE: Minneapolis ‘Star Tribune,’ ‘Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’ Head Top 30 Newspaper Web Sites in Time Spent

Almost half of the top 30 newspaper Web sites reported an increase in the average time spent per person for the month of June, according to the latest data from Nielsen Online.

Nielsen tracks the average time spent per person at a site over a course of a month.

Some newspapers, like the Houston Chronicle saw a huge spike in people lingering around the Web site. In June, the average time spent per person was almost 30 minutes while in June 2007 it was 16 minutes. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel had similar numbers: In June 2008 the average time spent was about 30 minutes and 30 seconds while in June 2007 it was almost 18 minutes.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer practically doubled the amount of time the average person spent in June on the site, up to 11 minutes from six minutes in June of last year. Its JOA publication The Seattle Times had a drop-off in time spent in June to about 9 minutes from 11 minutes, 33 seconds in June 2007.

The average time spent per person at The Wall Street Journal online dropped to 9 minutes, 41 seconds in June from almost 16 minutes during June ’07. At Boston.com, the time spent per person fell to 8 minutes, 24 seconds from 18 minutes, 47 seconds in June of last year. The Chicago Tribune followed suit: In June ’08 the average time spent was 7 minutes, 30 seconds, while in June’07 it was 18 minutes, 38 seconds.

The Star Tribune in Minneapolis was the number one paper out of the top 30 with the highest average of time spent per person in June at 30:18. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel followed by the Houston Chronicle were the next two on the list with next highest averages. The New York Times clocked in at an even 29 minutes.
