EXCLUSIVE: Most Newspaper Sites Down, in Time Spent

Several newspaper Web sites increased the average amount of time per visit in May, according to Nielsen Online.

The average time per person more than doubled at the Web site of the Detroit Free Press to almost 13 minutes. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer Web site also doubled from about seven minutes in May 2007 to more than 15 minutes in May 2008.

Nielsen Online (owned by E&P’s parent company) measures the average time spent per person over the course of month.

But for the most part, many Web sites saw the average time spent per person dwindle in May in year-over-year comparisons. The Wall Street Journal online fell to about 8-and-a-half minutes last month versus about 15 in May 2007.

Boston.com’s average time spent per visitor dropped to 9 minutes and 39 seconds down from more than 18 minutes in May ’07. The Web site of the Chicago Tribune met a similar fate, with the average time spent per person down to about 8 and half minutes from 17 minutes in same month a year ago.

The Web site of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution fell to about 11 minutes in May from about 32 minutes in May 2007. The average time spent on The Indianapolis Star online fell almost in half to 13 minutes and 44 seconds in May.
