MSNBC.com continues to secure the top 30 current event and global news destination sites in the month of April. The site reported 40 million monthly uniques, a 24% increase year-over-year, according to Nielsen Online.

Meanwhile, NYTimes.com, which is generally ranked in the top five, dropped down a bit to No. 6 with 16.5 million uniques with year-over-year decline of 8%. The New York Times is disputing the Nielsen numbers, noting its own internal data trends upward.

Fox News Digital Network gained nicely with 18.1 million uniques, a 67% increase compared to the same month last year.

Most sites on the list reported gains in monthly uniques with the exception of six. The Huffington Post made the greatest advance year-over-year, up 157% — even though there is no hot election race going on.

Below is the April list of the top current event and global news destination sites provided by Nielsen (owned by E&P’s parent company). The Web sites are ranked by uniques and based on U.S. home and work panels. The percent change is for April 2009 compared to April 2008. Please note that traffic can vary month to month based on several factors, including news events. Please note: The Wall Street Journal is covered by Nielsen on a separate list, tracking business and financial sites.
