A cartoon conference marking the 100th anniversary of Milton Caniff’s birth will be held next year in Columbus, Ohio.
Ohio State University’s Cartoon Research Library, which holds a “Festival of Cartoon Art” every three years, is running the Oct. 26-27, 2007, event. Caniff (1907-1988) is an Ohio State graduate who created the classic “Terry and the Pirates” and “Steve Canyon” adventure comics, and helped found the National Cartoonists Society and the now-defunct Newspaper Features Council. His papers were the initial collection in the Cartoon Research Library’s now-huge holdings.
The 2007 festival will focus on Caniff’s life and work, and his influence on contemporary comics.
“Terry and the Pirates” was syndicated by what is now Tribune Media Services, and “Steve Canyon” by King Features Syndicate.
