“Peanuts” creator Charles M. Schulz has been posthumously elected to the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame.

Schulz will be inducted during the 2007 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Spokane, Wash. That event has an opening ceremony tomorrow, and lasts through Sunday. Schulz’s widow, Jean, will accept the honor on behalf of the cartoonist, who died in 2000.

The “Peanuts” creator was an avid sports fan and recreational athlete. Two of the sports he loved and promoted were figure skating and ice hockey, both of which were periodically played by his comic’s characters.

“Peanuts” reruns continue to be syndicated by United Media.
