DC Comics has completed a massive project reprinting the entire 12-year run of “The Spirit” newspaper supplement, reports Publishers Weekly (PW).
Will Eisner’s 16-page comic insert was distributed in newspapers from 1940 to 1952. One of the people who worked with Eisner was Jules Feiffer, who went on to become a Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist for The Village Voice and Universal Press Syndicate.
The 24-volume DC Comics project took eight years, according to PW, which said there’ll also be a volume 25 (possibly in September) featuring the daily “Spirit” strip and a volume 26 (possibly in December) featuring Eisner’s post-1952 work with the detective character.
A movie based on “The Spirit” is scheduled for release this December.
Eisner (1917-2005) was also a comic-book cartoonist, graphic novelist, and teacher.
