Firefighters Newberg, Ore., and three nearby towns responded to a noon-time blaze at the at the White Birch/SP Newsprint mill June 20.
Local Fire Chief Les Hallman told the Newberg Graphic, “It took us about two hours of heavy firefighting to control the scene.” No employees were hurt, but a firefighter was reported to have sustained minor injuries from a fall.
While the cause was still being determined, the Graphic reported it occurred in the de-inking warehouse, which had similar fires in 2002 and 2007.
The newsprint recycler receives recovered newspapers in bales held together by metal straps that the newspaper said spark when skidding on the concrete floor during unloading.
“It’s a pretty manpower-intensive situation, moving those bales out of the way to expose the source of the fire, Chief Hallman told Graphic reporter David Sale.
