Thom Fladung, managing editor of the Detroit Free Press since 2002, has been named editor and vice president at Knight Ridder’s St. Paul Pioneer Press. He replaces Vicki Gowler, who has been named editor of The Idaho Statesman in Boise, just acquired by Knight Ridder from Gannett in August.

Par Ridder, publisher of the Pi-Press, said both will begin their new jobs next Monday.

Fladung, 45, previously served as managing editor at the Akron Beacon Journal from 2000 to 2002. ?The Pioneer Press has a proud history of feisty, memorable journalism and storytelling,? he said in a statement. ?I’m honored and excited to be part of its future.?

Gowler has been with KR since 1978, with stops at the Miami Herald and Duluth News Tribune, among others.
