Flagship Sales: Gannett Reports Gains in Ad Revenue, Led by ‘USA Today’

Gannett reported November operating revenue rose 3.5% on gains in the newspaper and broadcast divisions.

Newspaper advertising revenue grew 1.6% on a 2.3% decline in Run of Press (ROP) volume and 1.8% decrease in preprint volume.

Local advertising increased 1.2% on a slight decline in ROP volume. The company reported strength in the health and office supply categories while department store, consumer electronics, grocery and telecommunications lagged.

Classified advertising revenue dropped 2.8% on a 3.8% decline in ROP ad volume. Real estate was up 1.6%. Employment was down 4.8%. Auto decreased 11.7%. In the U.S., classified advertising fell 5.5% on declines in real estate, down 2.5%; employment, down 8.5%; and auto, down 12.8%.

National ad revenue advanced 12.9% on a 2.2% decline in ad volume. National volume at the company’s local newspapers was down 5.9%.

At USA Today, ad revenue grew 20.1% on a 13.6% increase in paid ad pages to 392 from 345. The national paper reported strong gains in the entertainment, technology, retail, travel, pharmaceutical, advocacy, telecommunications, and credit card categories.

Broadcasting revenue at Gannett rose 20% driven by strong political advertising.
