(AP) The Marion County Sheriff’s Office will begin distributing this week a directory listing the names and addresses of sexual offenders and predators living in the county.

The booklets will be distributed in area newspapers this week, starting Thursday in The Leader, Free Press and The Reporter and then Friday in The Ocala Star Banner.

The listings are divided into sections by ZIP Code. They include photo, name, address, conviction date.

The booklet also explains the sheriff’s office policy for monitoring sexual offenders and predators.

The information was gathered from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement website and records maintained by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.

”This booklet was produced in response to our community’s concerns due to recent events in Florida,” Sheriff Ed Dean said in a statement.

In the past few months, Floridians have been shocked by the high-profile kidnappings and murders of 9-year-old Jessica Lunsford and 13-year-old Sarah Lunde, allegedly by convicted sex offenders.

Several cities across the state have passed ordinances to keep sex offenders from moving near schools, day cares and parks.

Alessandra Soler Meetze, a spokeswoman for the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida, said similar information is published in newspapers in other parts of Florida.

”We’re kind of looking at these ordinances,” Soler Meetze said. “But this is a little different.”
