“For Better or For Worse” creator Lynn Johnston has received the Debwewin Citation for Excellence in Aboriginal-Issues Journalism from the Union of Ontario Indians.
The award recognizes Johnston’s realistic depiction of life in the fictional Mtigwaki (Land of Trees) in her comic. Elizabeth, one of the daughters in the strip, teaches in Mtigwaki.
“I’m not trying to preach — but rather to show that Native people are like everyone else,” said the Canada-based Johnston.
“It’s still too often stereotypes that label us,” said Chief John Beaucage of the Anishinabek Grand Council Assembly. He will introduce a resolution at the next AGCA meeting to recognize Johnston as an honorary Anishinabek citizen and Mtigwaki as an honorary Anishinabek member community.
“For Better or For Worse,” which turned 25 last year, appears in more than 2,000 newspapers via Universal Press Syndicate.
