Chicago by the early 1900s employed some of the nation’s most aggressive reporters. This three-inch nickeled brass Chicago Tribune star closely resembled Chicago police badges. Although these were issued to plant guards, Tribune reporters dashing to crime scenes frequently borrowed them and used them to cross police lines. The policemen, never anxious to antagonize reporters, complied.
