Bill King — a cartoonist for the Asbury Park Press of Neptune, N.J., who often focused on scholastic sports — died Thursday at the age of 84.

The award-winning King, who worked for the Press for more than 20 years, was the paper’s first full-time cartoonist when hired in 1968. Previous to that, he had freelanced cartoons for the paper since 1952.
