While interviewed by John Calloway on “Chicago Tonight” for WTTW TV for a program broadcast last Friday, former Chicago Tribune Editor Ann Marie Lipinski diplomatically handled a question from Calloway asking whether the changes wrought by “big, bad” Tribune Co. owner Sam Zell caused her departure.
“My dealings with him were limited,” she responded. “And again, I think there were challenges there that are not unique to the Chicago Tribune, or the Tribune Company. These are challenges that are true throughout the industry.
“He’s certainly a different style of owner than the paper has had in the recent past,” she added, smiling.
“In what way?” Calloway pressed.
“Just different,” she responded. “He doesn’t come up through the newspaper industry, which again, doesn’t need to be a bad thing.”
