Former Waterbury Executive Editor Eugene Martin Dies

Eugene L. Martin, retired executive editor of the Waterbury Republican and American and Sunday Republican newspapers, has died.

Martin, a lifelong Thomaston resident and an advocate for state Freedom of Information laws, died Thursday at Waterbury Hospital. He was 83.

Martin served as chairman of the legislative committee of the Connecticut Council on Freedom of Information, a post he held in 1975 when a strong right-to-know law was passed. He was chairman of the council from 1975 to 1977.

Martin joined the Waterbury Republican in 1948 as a Bristol bureau reporter. He became wire editor in 1952, was named assistant city editor in 1957, and city editor in 1964.

In November 1967, he was named executive editor of the Waterbury Republican, the American and the Sunday Republican. Martin retired in September 1988. He served as a member of the board of directors of American-Republican Inc., from 1979 until his retirement.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, a daughter and grandchildren.
