(AP) An original photograph of three firefighters raising an American flag at the World Trade Center site Sept. 11 sold for $89,625 at an auction Thursday, vastly exceeding its estimated selling price.
Christie’s auction house had estimated the photograph would sell for $5,000, said Margaret Doyle, a company spokeswoman.
The image, “Firefighters at Ground Zero, September 11, 2001,” was shot by Thomas Franklin, a photographer with The Record, of Hackensack, N.J. The photograph was a finalist in this year’s Pulitzer prizes and was named as the 2001 Photo of the Year by E&P.
The 14-inch-by-9-inch color photo is the only existing original print of the image. It was autographed by Franklin and the firefighters and was purchased by the owner of a New York pharmaceuticals company, Doyle said.
The money will be divided between two charities designated by the firefighters and the North Jersey Media Group, which owns The Record.
