Newspaper War Becomes Multi-front Battle
Two new newspapers have been launched just south of San Francisco, adding even more players to the region’s fiercely competitive newspaper war.
The Daily News and the Daily Journal are free tabloids circulating in San Mateo County, giving the city of San Mateo alone a staggering six dailies now competing for readers.
Using low ad rates to hook small businesses, the new freebies focus on local news. The Daily Journal is run by the same group that launched a free daily paper in Berkeley in 1999, the Daily Planet.
The Daily News is a sister publication of a free daily paper in Palo Alto that started with eight pages in 1995 and now produces about 50 pages a day.
