NEWSPAPER IN EDUCATION PROGRAMS HONORED
Awards Given During NIE Conference
Outstanding Newspaper In Education programs were honored in New York this week by the Newspaper Association of America Foundation.
The first Betty Debnam Mini Page Award went to the Bangor (Maine) Daily News and Donna Fransen, the paper’s manager of education and literacy services. The new $1,000 award is presented to NIE coordinators who develop original projects for children in grades 3-6 using “The Mini Page” or its characters as the primary teaching tool.
The Mini Page, created by Debnam more than 30 years ago, is distributed by Universal Press Syndicate to more than 500 daily newspapers. The award is funded by the Andrews McMeel Universal Foundation.
